Panel to probe First Amendment and disinformation tensions.
November 18 Conversationalist Series features Samar Ali, Deborah Fisher, Dr. Andrew Ladley
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Thought leaders in law, diplomacy, and media will discuss the tension between First Amendment freedoms and disinformation in a program called “Protected Speech and Fear in America” hosted by national non-profit Millions of Conversations.
Millions of Conversations Founding President and CEO Samar Ali will moderate the discussion which includes Deborah Fisher, director of the John Seigenthaler Chair of Excellence in First Amendment Studies at Middle Tennessee State University and global conflict mediation expert Dr. Andrew Ladley.
This installment of Millions of Conversations’ Conversationalist Series is sponsored by AllianceBernstein.
Ali said understanding a rising tide of fear in America is important to healing our democracy and breaking down divisions in our country.
“From main street to the halls of Washington D.C. our country is grappling with an unprecedented flow of information on social media and online that includes disinformation and language designed to incite fear and suspicion of our neighbors,” Ali said. “How we reconcile our First Amendment rights with these powerful communication tools is one of the greatest challenges of our generation.”
In addition to leading Millions of Conversation, Ali is a research professor of political science and law at Vanderbilt University where she also co-chairs the Vanderbilt Project on Unity & American Democracy.
“At AllianceBernstein, we pride ourselves on fostering a culture of diverse perspectives where all voices are heard and valued, “said Janessa Cox-Irvin, Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion and Corporate Citizenship at AllianceBernstein.
“By partnering with Millions of Conversations, we are honored to help lead a dialogue about how our society can move forward by creating a space for meaningful, open debate about the opportunities and challenges we face in this country.”
