On July 17, 2021, Nashville revealed a historical marker and the dedication of Rep. John Lewis Way. The weekend of events concluded with a celebration of John Lewis’s life at the historic Ryman Auditorium.
Speakers and performances included Rep. Lewis’ brother Grant Lewis, presidential historian Jon Meacham, Vice President Al Gore, civil rights activist Rev. Jim Lawson, singer and songwriter Darius Rucker, producer and screenwriter Callie Khouri, and the Presidents of all HBCUs in Nashville along with Vanderbilt University.
The newly named Rep. John Lewis Way is now the address for the Woolworth (the location of the historical lunch counter sit ins), our state legislators’ offices, two sports stadiums (Nashville Sounds & Nashville Predators), The Music City Convention Center, the old Greyhound Bus Station (Freedom Riders), the Ryman Auditorium, and many more landmarks and businesses.
